AES Title I Program

What is Title I?

The Title I, Part A program provides financial assistance to state and local educational agencies to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards.

What will the Title I program do for my child?

The Title I program will provide your child with extra educational assistance beyond the regular classroom.

How do schools receive Title I money?

  1. The Federal Government provides funding to each state.
  2. State Education Agencies send this money to school districts.
  3. How much money each school receives is determined by the number of low-income students attending that school.
  4. Title I schools:
    • Identify the students at their school who need the most educational assistance based on the criteria the school has chosen. Students do NOT have to be from low-income families to receive Title I services.
    • Set goals for improving the skills of Title I students at their school.
    • Measure student progress to determine the success of the program.
    • Develop programs for students to support the regular classroom instruction.

What does the Title I program generally offer?

  • Smaller classes or special instructional spaces
  • Additional teachers and aides
  • Opportunities for professional development for school staff
  • Additional time for teaching Title I students the skills they need
  • A variety of supplementary teaching methods
  • An individualized program for students
  • Additional teaching materials which supplement the regular instruction

If my child is in the AES Title I program, how can I help?

Parents can help their children be more successful by:
  • Assisting your child in ways that enrich what the teacher is doing
  • Learning more about the school and becoming involved
  • Supporting your child and the school
  • Making decisions about your child's education
  • Finding out what your child is supposed to learn to meet the standards for his or her grade-level
  • Finding out what your child is being taught
  • Finding out how the Title I program is helping your child meet the standards
  • Keeping in close touch with your child's teacher
  • Making sure your child does his/her homework
  • Attending parent-teacher conferences
  • Talking with your child about school
  • Becoming a school volunteer

What right do I have as a Title I parent?

You, as Title I Parents, have the right to the following:
  • Request the qualifications of your child's teachers 
  • Be involved in the development of Arab City School System's Title I Plan
  • Be involved in the development of Arab City School System's Parental Involvement Plan
  • Be involved in the development of APS/AES's Continuous Improvement Plan
  • Be involved in the development of APS/AES's Parental Involvement Plan
  • Be involved in the development of the School-Parent Compact
  • Be involved in how the Homeless, English Language Learners, and Parental Involvement set-aside money is spent

As a Title I parent, how do I participate in the review of the above mentioned plans?

An annual Title I meeting is conducted every spring to evaluate the Title I program, plans, and compacts.  You can participate in the development by attending the spring meeting at your child's school.  The date and time of the meeting will be sent home with your child in April.  

Title I Parent Liaison

We also need parent liaisons for Title I parents at each Title I school.  The parent liaison will be another contact person for Title I parents and the schools.  The parent liaison will serve on the Federal Programs Parental Advisory Committee.  For more information, or if you are interested in serving as a parent liaison in your school, please contact Stacie Pace at 256.586.6011 or [email protected].
